Justin Murphy, a Navy veteran and Republican Senate nominee, told President Trump to “finish” the Iran war during his only debate with Democratic incumbent Cory Booker. He then delivered a cowboy-hat call to action that sent the crowd into an uproar.
New Jersey Globe moderator David Wildstein asked Murphy to imagine receiving a call from Trump and being given the power to recommend the next move on Iran. Murphy answered with two words: “Finish it.”
Murphy argued that the United States could not stop halfway through the conflict and walk away without resolving the threat. He described Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a radical terrorist organization and said it had denied Iranian people a decent life while spreading violence, repression, assassination, and terrorism across the Middle East and beyond.
He also connected his position to the 1979 hostage crisis. Murphy recalled watching the takeover of the U.S. Embassy and the captivity of 52 Americans for 444 days. In his view, the episode represents decades of Iranian-backed terror and oppression that must finally end.
The force of Murphy’s response stood in sharp contrast to Booker’s position. Moments earlier, Booker had called Trump’s decision to confront the Iranian regime “one of the most colossally stupid things” the president had ever done. He also warned that the United States was heading into “another Middle East quagmire.”
Booker later dismissed Murphy’s approach as “yahoo cowboy foreign policy” and “false bravado.” The Democratic senator said military action should come only after diplomacy had been tried and should remain a last resort.
Murphy’s background gave his argument added context. He served four years in the Navy aboard the USS Comte De Grasse, including time in the Persian Gulf during the Iran-Iraq War. He also previously served as deputy mayor of Tabernacle. Murphy has argued that Iran’s nuclear ambitions make delay dangerous and that the regime’s long record of exporting terrorism cannot continue.
He closed by speaking directly to Trump: “Mr. President, put your cowboy hat on and get out there and kick some ass and get this done and done right.” The audience responded loudly, while Booker appeared visibly taken aback. The line was later shared widely online.
🔥 Now this is how you field the questiond about the war in Iran. The crowd's response is epic.
GOP Senatorial candidate Justin Murphy's response was pure gold. Senator Cory "Spartacus" Booker's face tells the entire story as Democrats have seen no one come Out swinging like… pic.twitter.com/kZemGWYUzd

Why It Matters
This exchange matters because it reduced a major foreign policy dispute to a clear contrast. Murphy presented decisive military action as necessary to stop the Iranian regime and prevent further danger. Booker argued that force should follow diplomacy and warned that the United States could become trapped in another Middle East conflict. For New Jersey voters, the debate offered a direct choice between pressure that seeks a final resolution and restraint aimed at avoiding a wider war.
The argument also leaves serious questions unresolved. Would the tougher course Murphy supports end the danger he describes, or produce the broader conflict Booker fears? How will voters weigh Murphy’s military experience and blunt delivery against Booker’s call for caution? The stakes extend beyond the campaign because the dispute concerns the Iranian people, American policy, and the president’s next decisions. A memorable line can command attention, but it cannot settle the consequences of either strategy.
