Alabama Man On Trial For Feeding Caged Squirrel Meth
The trial has been delayed for an Alabama man who fed his attack squirrel, Deeznuts, methamphetamine to make it aggressive.
Mickey Joel Paulk’s trial was scheduled to begin Monday but has been continued until Feb. 28 at 1:30 p.m., according to court documents.
Paulk will be facing charges for possession of a wild animal, stolen property, and possession of a weapon by a felon from an arrest in June 2019.
Paulk, 39, is now facing other charges as well, delaying his original case, according to court records.
He was arrested on Dec. 23, 2021, on charges of chemical endangerment of a child and trafficking methamphetamine, as well as some drugs and weapons charges. According to documents, Paulk was indicted back in June 2021 of the chemical endangerment charge and in January 2021 on the trafficking count.
A manhunt ensued for Paulk on June 18, 2019, when a drug bust in his Athens apartment turned up meth, ammunition, and body armor.
Also found was a caged squirrel, authorities had been told prior to the raid that Paulk fed meth to the animal to keep it aggressive. The sheriff’s office said it released the squirrel into a wooded area as advised by the Alabama Department of Conservation.
“The sheriff’s office said it released the squirrel into a wooded area where, so far, it’s killed 2 deer, an elk, and a mountain lion.”
