NBA Legend Admits He’s Broke After Squandering Nearly $200 Million

Paul Pierce says he is broke after losing his Fox Sports television job, while a legal fight over support payments has placed his finances under a microscope.

The former Boston Celtics star told a court he is “drowning financially” and “tapped out.” His former network income, reportedly $119,000 a month, is gone. In September, he said his business ventures produced only $23,000.

That is a steep change for a player who reportedly earned $195 million during a 19-season NBA career. Pierce now lists about $300,000 in bank funds and roughly $3 million in property. Those figures show what he says remains, but the filings do not establish that he hid assets.

His spending claims make the cash crunch easier to understand. Pierce reported $7,000 monthly for restaurants, $5,000 for groceries, $8,000 for child care, $3,500 for entertainment, $3,200 for utilities and $1,000 for clothing.

Those costs are separate from about $28,000 in monthly child support and $20,000 in spousal support. His reported obligations therefore approach $75,700 every month, creating a sharp mismatch with the income he says is now available.

The dispute involves Princess Santiago, Pierce’s former girlfriend and the mother of his son, who was born earlier this year. Santiago is seeking about $30,000 each month in child support, while Pierce has argued for about $4,145.

A temporary order shown in a September court filing required Pierce to pay $8,508 per month, along with $100,000 toward Santiago’s legal fees and $10,000 for a forensic accountant. Her latest motion requests another $40,000 in attorney fees. She also says Pierce has not paid the ordered $10,000 needed to examine his finances.

The financial questions go beyond the support amount. Santiago alleges that Pierce withheld records connected to his cannabis company and Fox Sports income and failed to disclose an interest in a commercial property. Those claims remain allegations, and the filings do not prove that he concealed assets.

Why It Matters

This case matters because it turns a familiar success story into a dispute over what financial stability looks like after high earnings end. Pierce’s reported career income sounds enormous, yet the filings describe a much tighter present-day position, with major recurring obligations and no steady television paycheck. For Pierce, the issue is whether his current income, property and business interests can support the payments being requested. For Santiago, the stakes involve securing dependable support for their son while the financial picture remains contested.

The filings also show why family-law fights can become so detailed and adversarial. The disagreement is not limited to one payment figure. It reaches into business records, reported television earnings, property interests, legal fees and the cost of reviewing the finances. The unresolved questions are what income and assets should be counted, which records are complete and how the court will balance the competing claims. The documents provide a snapshot of a dispute, not a final finding that Pierce hid money or that either side’s requested amount will prevail.

Santiago said she appreciates that Pierce has made an effort to see their son. She described her goal as stability, consistent decision-making and a healthier father-son relationship as he continues building that connection.
