Texas Couple Find Abandoned Baby In Backyard Shed
John and Katharine McClain say they live in Livingston, Texas, but far enough away from much activity.
“It’s just peaceful and quiet,” Katharine said.
But Saturday morning, their security camera caught a man checking their vehicle doors before he stole a neighbor’s pickup truck.
The sound of him taking off in the truck is what woke them up.
“Called the neighbors and they reported it stolen,” John said.
Just when they thought the excitement was over it had actually just begun.
Security video shows John investigating after Archie, the family dog, kept barking at their shed.
“I came out here with him and heard a cry,” John said.
The cry was coming from inside their backyard shed.
“So when I opened it up, the baby was laying right by the motorcycle right there,” John said.
Katharine’s said her first thought was a baby snake or some other animal.
“He said, ‘call 911 quick there’s an infant in here,'” Katharine said.
She said as soon as the dispatcher told her it was alright to pick up the baby, she took her to the house and wrapped her in a towel to wait for an ambulance.
The baby girl was checked out on site before being airlifted to Houston.
“I was pretty frantic. Yes, I’m a mom. I was pretty frantic and just shocked, and it’s still kind of got me a little bit,” Katharine said.
The stolen truck was later located with the baby’s father behind the wheel.
Records show he’s now in the Polk County Jail on charges including abandoning or endangering a child.
The McClains were told his vehicle was found abandoned along railroad tracks that run right behind their property.
“I just hope he comes out and takes care of his kid and cleans his act up,” John said.
The McClains say they’d even be willing to add the baby they found to their family.
“I just want her to be happy and live a good life and, you know, if they gave her to me, I’ll take her in a heartbeat and she’ll never have any worries again,” Katharine said.
